In dodgy times like this, with weather and politicians and the like, it makes sense to think ahead.
And your planning should include emergency disaster planning for your pets.

After scouring the earth we at Dawg Towers, home of The Daily Dawg, have found the Emergency Pet Jacket:

“Made from the same material used by Japan’s world-class firefighters, this flame-retardant suit protects from heat while adding a carrying handle for controlling and transporting frantic pets. It’s not just for your furry friend, though- pockets on the side of the jacket hold emergency tools and supplies for pet and owner alike. With rugged hardware, professional-grade materials, and rapid velcro closure, it’s one less thing to think about in emergency situations.”

It comes with all sorts of stuff, including poo bags, (probably made to withstand nuclear blasts), and instructions. The instructions are in Japanese, but hey, they are intuitive, so you won’t have to panic as the nuclear tsunami that is Gordon Brown threatens to overwhelm you.

Be Prepared!
(It really is a dumb idea, and only about £350. Feh.)

But Woah! That snow and what goes with it might not make your dog a happy chum. After the initial excitement, the leaping around, making snowdogs and all, after all that it’s back to walkies, plain vanilla walkies. And the snow is icey, and it’s being gritted, maybe with salt and chemicals. And the poor dogs’ paws start to crack, and chap and hurt like billy-O.

So, please, after you have walked through the snow and are home safe and warm, check your dog’s pads. Wash away any snow and ice, (and grit and chemicals), and dry. And before you go out a thin coating of vaseline rubbed into the pads will really help your dog enjoy the weather.

OK. Crimbo again, with the WARNING!

Please don’t let the dog eat Xmas pudding or Xmas cake: lots of grape things, raisins etc which are defo bad for dogs. You don’t want a sick dog at Xmas and nor does your vet.

Please be sensible: if you are having lots of people over allow the dog a bit of space to escape to, (and don’t just chuck him in the garden), as whilst dogs love parties, they can get overwhelmed.

Now, get ready for a good ‘un. Lovely walks to get rid of that bloated feeling, love and affection from your best friend and not from mad aunty Mabeline and her pet ninja budgies.

Did you know that large black dogs are the least likely to be chosen for rehoming from dog rescue centres? Very sad and must depress them, which is the other sort of black dog: depression.

“The Humane Educational Society will do its part to fight “black dog syndrome” with an adopt-athon this weekend at PetSmart, 2130 Gunbarrel Road. According to HES officials, big, black dogs often are the last to be adopted from animal shelters, a phenomenon known as black dog syndrome. ”
—”Black dogs at adopt-athon,” Chattanooga Times Free Press, November 13, 2009

“For many dogs awaiting adoption, the speed with which they find a home may rest not on their breed, gender or age but on one trait that has no bearing on their personality or temperament. Shelter officials have dubbed it black dog syndrome — the propensity of dark-coated animals to be passed over for adoption in favor of their lighter counterparts.”
—Craig Nakano, “Black dog bias?,” Los Angeles Times, December 6, 2008

So, if you are that way minded: a black dog for a white Christmas?
